I Spy Sight Words

Another sight word game is a version of "I Spy". Give each child a list of sight word or thier flashcards to use. Give your child clues about various sight words. Some ideas for clues include the beginning and ending letter of the word, number of letters in each word, etc. For example, say: "I spy with my little eye a word that has three letters. It ends with the letter E." Your child will would need to find the correct word on the sight word list (or flashcards) and read it aloud correctly.

Spiders

Using the fun of Halloween, we practiced our sight words. I purchased a black spiderweb from the craft store and we have a vase of random Halloween-things including some spider rings.
With their flashcards, I quizzed the girls on their sight words.

For each correct word, they hung a spider ring on the web. Sometimes they had to read one word other times they read 3-4 words at a time.

We had fun decorating for Halloween and reviewing our sight words!

Beads

We have some letter beads at home. Today I asked the girls to spell out their sight words using the letter beads. I placed the flashcards on the table and they got to work. Only problem is that the beads are all capital letters while the sight words are all lowercase. It caused a few problems but works well for the most part.

Once the sight word was spelled. I strung the beads on some elastic thread. I tied a bead to each end (I found this was the easiest way to secure them)

Now we can use our beads to practice our sight words! I like how the girls can see each individual letter for each word. I left a little space on the elastic thread so we can slide the letters as we spell out the word.

Poster Board

Today I put together a tri-fold poster board with the letters of the alphabet. As we learn our sight words, we will write them under the beginning letter. This way the kids can look at the board to remember the spelling of their sight words and we can use it to practice as well

Spelling Boxes

Use this link to create a worksheet of your current sight words. Worksheet below has 8 of my daughter's sight words. Using spelling boxes help build phonological awareness by breaking the words into letters/sounds and they teach your child to recognize the number of letters/sounds in the word.

Star Word Ceiling - You want to have those "Star Words" everywhere in your house. Print the words up on some stars and put them on the ceiling in your child's room. The kids love to lay down and record the words they can read on the Star Word sheet. Lots of fun!
